Parent Empowerment
An aim of Black Mathematicians is to develop empowerment within African American parents to advocate for their children in the area of mathematics. One way we aim to accomplish this it to raise consciousness of parent involvement as a form of social capital. One scholar suggested that social capital consists of social networks and connections, through which parents accumulate exchanges and shared identities to create support and increased access to valued resources.
Black Mathematicians works with parents at the grassroots level to raise awareness, empower, and take action. Town meetings are held at local community centers and churches. Contact us for more information on how to host a town meeting at your location.
